Biggest Bird

Filed under: science — ted @ 2:37 pm

A skull fossil found by a teenager in Argentina has proved to be a new species: the biggest bird ever.

The super-awesome thing about this story is that the skull was discovered by an amateur:

An Argentine high school student, Guillermo Aguirre-Zabiala, found the fossil two years ago among the rock outcrops between two houses by the railroad station in his village east of Bariloche.

The young man was so galvanized by his discovery that he changed his course of study from psychology to paleontology and Earth science, Chiappe said. “This discovery has shaped his life.”

  1. Paleontologists have also reconstructed what this Bird’s call would sound like. Ahem:

    “Here, kitty kitty kitty.”

  2. Calls seeking comment from Big Bird were not returned. A note was later found in his Sesame Street alleyway home, reading simply “I’ve gone to live with Mr. Hooper.”

  3. Clearly a Celebrity Cage Match is in order: Big Bird vs. Biggest Bird. A clear physical advantage to the Argentinian, but intangibles and public support give the ambiguously young resident of Sesame Street a chance to upset.
